HOW TO MEASURE YOUR CHILD'S HEAD FOR A MOUNTAIN BIKE HELMET

A helmet only protects properly if it fits. Measure first, buy the right size, then do the fit check before every ride.

YOU'LL NEED

Soft Tape Measure or String/Shoe Lace and a Tape Measure

Step 1

Hair as they ride. Take out bobbles, clips and plaits. If they always ride with a low ponytail, leave it in.

Step 2

Find the line. Start about 2 cm (roughly two finger-widths) above the eyebrows. Run the tape just above the ears and around the fullest part at the back of the head.

Step 3

Level and snug. Keep the tape flat, not twisted, and snug without squeezing.

Using string? Pinch where it meets, then lay it along a ruler.

PICKING THE SIZE

Every brand sizes differently, so match your number to that helmet's own size chart, not just the S/M/L label.

Between sizes? Pick the one where your number sits mid-range, so the dial can tighten or loosen as they grow.

NEVER buy big to grow into. A loose helmet can slip and leave the forehead exposed in a crash.
